What to Know Before Ordering a Lead-Lined Door

A lead-lined door is one of the last pieces of a shielded room to get ordered, but it's one of the first things an inspector will look at. The door is the most frequently used opening in the room, and it's the point where shielding continuity is most often compromised — by a mismatch between the door and the surrounding wall, a frame that wasn't lined to the right specification, or hardware that doesn't account for the door's weight. Getting it right from the start saves time, cost, and the headache of a failed inspection.

How Lead-Lined Doors Are Built

A lead-lined door is a 1-3/4" solid core wood door with lead sheet laminated under each face — meaning the lead is sandwiched inside the door construction, not applied to the surface. This keeps the door looking and functioning like a standard door while providing the required radiation attenuation.

Lead thicknesses range from 1/32" to 1/4", covering the full range of specifications a physicist is likely to call for in medical, dental, veterinary, and NDT facilities. For lead thicknesses up to 1/8", the nominal door thickness stays at 1-3/4". Above 1/8", the door thickness increases proportionally with the lead thickness — worth noting if the rough opening was sized for a standard door and the specified lead is on the heavier end.

All lead-lined doors are built to NCRP 147 specifications — the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements standard for structural shielding in medical imaging facilities. The standard finish is a birch veneer, which can be painted, stained, or coated with polyurethane. Door Slab vs. Full Door Assembly

It's the right choice when the contractor is handling the frame and prep work on-site, or when a lead-lined frame is already in place from a previous installation. Standard slab sizes are in stock at Intech's Houston warehouse and ship within two days of order. Custom sizes and lead thicknesses take 2–3 weeks.

A complete lead-lined door assembly comes fully prepped and ready to install, including the door slab, a lead-lined steel KD (knock-down) frame, lever lockset, and continuous hinge. The door is pre-drilled for the included hardware. This is the right choice for new construction or when the entire door opening needs to be shielded as a unit. Complete assemblies are custom-quoted and have a longer lead time, so factor that into your project timeline.

The Frame: Why It Can't Be an Afterthought

The frame is where shielding continuity is most frequently lost. A lead-lined door set into an unlined or inadequately lined frame creates a gap at the perimeter — radiation doesn't need much of an opening to pass through. The frame needs to be lined to the same lead equivalency as the surrounding wall and the door itself.

The lead lining in the wall should lap behind or overlap the frame so there's no unshielded gap at the interface. Continuous Hinges: Why They're Required

A standard door uses two or three individual butt hinges. Lead-lined doors use a continuous hinge — a single hinge that runs the full height of the door. The reason is straightforward: lead is heavy, and a door with significant lead content can weigh several hundred pounds depending on its size and lead thickness. Standard hinges aren't rated for that load and will fail over time.

A continuous hinge distributes the weight evenly across the full door height, which protects both the hinge and the door frame from the stress of repeated use. It's not optional — all of Intech's lead-lined doors are supplied with continuous hinges as standard.

One dimensional note from the product specs: because a continuous hinge adds material to the door edge, the door width is machined to allow for the additional clearance between the door and the hinge. The hinge holes are not pre-drilled at the factory — this is done on-site by the contractor after the frame is installed and adjusted. Trying to pre-drill before the frame is set leads to alignment problems, so this is intentional.

Sizing the Door and Rough Opening

Standard lead-lined door sizes are available in 36"W × 84"H and 36"W × 80"H, with 80" and 84" doors shipping on a standard 4' × 8' pallet and 96" doors requiring a longer pallet at 105". Custom sizes are available for openings that fall outside standard dimensions.

When sizing the rough opening, account for the frame dimensions — specifically the 5" throat depth — and confirm that the wall thickness at the opening matches. If the door is going into an existing opening that was originally framed for a standard door, measure carefully before ordering, as lead-lined frames are not interchangeable with standard hollow metal frames.

Shielding Continuity at the Threshold

The threshold — the gap at the bottom of the door — is a detail that's easy to overlook and frequently comes up during inspections. For most diagnostic X-ray applications, the beam direction and energy level mean that radiation traveling low and parallel to the floor is not a primary concern, and a small threshold gap is acceptable. For higher-energy applications or rooms with specific physicist requirements, an automatic door bottom or threshold seal may be specified.

If your physicist's report calls for a sealed threshold, confirm this before the door is installed — retrofitting a threshold seal after the fact is possible but more involved than specifying it upfront.

Alternatives to a Lead-Lined Door

A traditional lead-lined door isn't always the right solution — or the only one. Two alternatives are worth knowing about depending on the situation.

Lead-lined curtains are a practical substitute for doorways, windows, and pass-throughs where a hinged door isn't needed or isn't practical. A lead-lined curtain on a track can be pulled across the opening during imaging and pushed aside when it isn't needed — no construction, no frame work, and installation that typically takes under two hours. The track mounts either above the door frame or from the ceiling, and normally extends 1–2 feet to one side of the opening so the curtain can clear the doorway completely when pulled back.

Curtain sizing follows a straightforward rule: for a standard 36" ADA-width doorway, a 48" curtain should be selected to ensure overlap on each side. The most common curtain length is 7 feet, which covers a standard 80" door height and is also appropriate for pass-throughs, since scatter radiation above 7 feet is not typically a concern for occupants. Curtains are available in protection levels from 0.25mm up to 1.0mm lead equivalency and beyond, with the right level determined by the same physicist's report that specifies the wall shielding. Curtains wider than 4 feet are manufactured in multiple panels with overlapping flaps secured with heavy-duty Velcro to maintain shielding continuity across the seam.
