This article walks through what's available, how the products differ, and how to think about which one fits your needs.
What Adhesive-Backed Shielding Is — and Isn't
Adhesive-backed flexible radiation shielding is a flexible elastomeric sheet material with a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) backing. You peel the liner, press the sheet onto a surface, and it bonds directly — no fasteners, no framing, no contractor required. It's designed for surfaces that aren't already shielded and need to be, without a construction project to get there.
These products work well on plastics, metals, wood, powder-coated surfaces, and painted walls. The adhesive is a high-strength acrylic formulation with excellent chemical resistance, and bond strength continues to increase over the first 72 hours after application. One important note: do not try to reposition after application. The adhesive is designed for a permanent bond, and attempting to reapply will compromise it. Surfaces should be clean, dry, and degreased — ideally wiped with isopropyl alcohol — before the panel goes on.
Standard panel size across most of the line is 24" × 48" (600mm × 1200mm). Custom shapes, die-cut panels, and larger roll sizes are also available. Maximum sheet size for most products is 24" × 48", though rolls in wider formats exist for some series.
The Product Families
Intech's adhesive-backed shielding breaks down into several distinct product families, each designed for a different radiation environment or application requirement. Understanding the differences between them is the key to ordering the right material.
XRC449 Series — Lead-Free, General Purpose (to 160 kVp)
The XRC449 series is the workhorse of the line — a lead-free unskinned rubber shielding panel suited for general-purpose medical X-ray, radiology cabinet shielding, NDT applications, food inspection, and security X-ray systems. It's rated for X-ray and gamma radiation up to 160 kVp, which covers the vast majority of diagnostic and cabinet X-ray environments.
Lead equivalency ranges from 0.25mm up to 6.4mm, with common physicist-specified thicknesses of 1/32", 1/16", 3/32", and 1/8" available as standard options. The finish is a smooth natural brown rubber. All lead-free products in Intech's lineup are RoHS compliant, meaning they meet the Restriction of Hazardous Substances standard — no regulated heavy metals in the shielding material itself.
XRC440 Series — Lead-Free, Broad Spectrum (High Energy)
For applications involving high-energy gamma radiation above 100 keV or X-ray above 180 kVp — such as nuclear isotope shielding, 200–600 kVp NDT systems, or linear accelerators — the XRC440 broad spectrum series is the right product. It uses a different shielding compound than the XRC449 that performs better at higher energies, and is available in both skinned black and unskinned natural brown rubber formats.
The unskinned Fortress version (XRC442) and skinned black version (XRC438/XRC101/XRC102) cover lead equivalencies from 0.125mm up to 6.4mm. If your application involves nuclear medicine, high-energy industrial radiography, or any source above 160 kVp, this is the series to specify — the XRC449 is not rated for those energy levels.
XRC439 Series — Skinned Black Xyflex® (Lead-Free)
The XRC439 Xyflex® series is a lead-free shielding material with a black PET-ET skin finish, available in 0.25mm, 0.35mm, and 0.50mm lead equivalency. The skinned finish provides a cleaner aesthetic and added surface durability, making it well-suited for visible installations inside equipment enclosures or cabinets where appearance matters alongside performance.
XRC635 Series — Adhesive-Backed Leaded Vinyl
For applications where lead is preferred or specified, the XRC635 series offers adhesive-backed leaded vinyl shielding with a lead-free vinyl skin on the outer surface for safer handling. Available in 0.35mm, 0.50mm, and 1.0mm lead equivalency, it's suitable for gamma radiation and X-ray tube protection in general medical and NDT settings. Sheets and rolls are available up to 4 ft (1200mm) width.
XRC116 Series — FDA Food Contact Compliant
This is a specialized product for a specific regulatory requirement: shielding on surfaces that may come into contact with food. The XRC116 series is compliant with FDA Direct Food Contact regulations, 21 CFR 177.600(e)(f), making it appropriate for use inside food scanner X-ray systems and other manufacturing environments where radiation shielding is required on food-contact surfaces. It's available in 0.125mm and 0.25mm lead equivalency in a smooth royal blue rubber skin finish. The adhesive on this series is also FDA Direct Food Contact compliant per 21 CFR 175.125.
Surface Compatibility and Application Notes
The adhesive performs well on metals (stainless steel, aluminum, galvanized), coated metals (primed and powder-coated), wall and door surfaces (wood, laminates, primed drywall), and most plastics. Vinyl surfaces or surfaces containing plasticizers are not recommended without testing first, as plasticizers can interfere with adhesive bonding over time. The adhesive is also not suited for long-term outdoor exposure to direct sunlight or submersion in liquids.
Application temperature matters: the ideal range is 70°F to 100°F (21°C to 38°C). Application below 50°F is not recommended because the adhesive becomes too firm to bond readily — though once properly applied, low-temperature environments are generally fine for long-term use.
Surface laminates are optionally available on many panels, including stainless steel, aluminum diamond plate, and impact-resistant plastic, for applications where the shielding surface will be exposed to physical wear or requires a more durable outer face.
Storage and Shelf Life
PSA-backed materials should be stored at 72°F and 50% relative humidity to preserve adhesive performance. The adhesive should be applied within 12 months of manufacture — material stored beyond that point may not develop full bond strength upon application. Choosing the Right Product
The most important selection criterion is the energy level of the radiation source. For standard medical X-ray and cabinet shielding applications up to 160 kVp, the XRC449 series covers most needs. For high-energy gamma or industrial X-ray above 180 kVp, the XRC440 broad spectrum series is required. If FDA food contact compliance is needed, only the XRC116 series meets that standard. If lead is specified rather than lead-free, the XRC635 leaded vinyl series is the option.
Lead equivalency should always come from your physicist's shielding report or the equipment specification — Intech offers common physicist-specified thicknesses as standard options across most series, which simplifies matching the product to the requirement.
