A physicist's shielding report analyzes your specific equipment, room layout, and the occupancy of adjacent spaces to arrive at a lead equivalency requirement for each surface — walls, doors, windows, and ceiling if applicable.

What Is Lead Equivalency?
Lead equivalency is the standard unit for measuring shielding performance. A material rated at 1/16" lead equivalency blocks the same amount of radiation as a 1/16"-thick sheet of pure lead. It allows you to compare very different products — flexible shielding panels, lead-lined drywall, curtains — on a single consistent scale. When your physicist specifies a shielding requirement, it will be expressed in lead equivalency, and whatever product you order should meet or exceed that figure.
What's the Difference Between Lead Sheet and Lead-Lined Drywall?
Both achieve the same end result — a shielded wall — but they get there differently. Lead-lined drywall comes with lead already bonded to the back of a standard 5/8" gypsum board. It installs like regular drywall and is the most common choice for new construction or planned renovations.
Lead sheet is pure lead in roll or flat form that gets fastened directly to wall studs, with standard drywall hung over it afterward. Lead buttons to cover screw holes are occasionally requested but are not required; since 2004, standard screws have been considered sufficient for shielding at the fastener point.

Batten strips are thin strips of lead used to cover the vertical seams between sheets of lead-lined drywall. Because radiation travels in straight lines, a gap or seam in the shielding is a potential path through the wall. Batten strips overlap those seams to maintain continuous coverage.
