Once you know which shielding material fits your radiation source, a second question follows: does it stay a flexible sheet, or become a rigid panel — and what surface faces the room? Intech offers both, and the right answer depends less on the shielding itself and more on where and how it's going to be used.

Flexible Sheet: Bare Rubber vs. Skinned

Most adhesive-backed shielding ships as a flexible rubber sheet, and within that, you have a choice of surface finish:

  • Unskinned (bare rubber) — the standard finish on general-purpose lead-free shielding, the most economical option, a smooth natural brown rubber finish, well suited to applications where the shielding is hidden inside an enclosure or isn't subject to constant handling or abrasion.
  • PET-ET skinned — available as adhesive-backed lead-free Xyflex shielding, a tougher, smoother black finish with meaningfully higher peel strength (100 oz/in and up, versus roughly 70–80 oz/in for unskinned or vinyl-skinned material) — a better fit where the surface will see more physical contact.
  • UHMW skinned — the most abrasion-resistant option available, offered within the broad-spectrum shielding line, used where the shielding surface will take ongoing wear.
  • Vinyl skinned — a smooth black finish specific to the leaded vinyl material line.
  • Royal blue rubber skin — used specifically on the FDA food-contact compliant material, both for its surface properties and as a visual identifier that distinguishes it from non-food-rated shielding during installation.

All of these remain flexible — they can wrap, bend, and trim to fit irregular equipment interiors, curved surfaces, or tight spaces a rigid panel couldn't reach.

Rigid Panels: When Flexible Isn't the Right Format

For exposed walls, doors, and higher-traffic areas, a rigid panel — the same shielding core laminated to a solid facing material — is often the better fit than a flexible sheet applied directly to a surface. Facing options include:

  • Kydex — a fire-resistant, impact-resistant thermoplastic facing, giving a clean finished appearance and a machinable rigid panel. This is used on Intech's Fortress adhesive wall panels and standard self-adhesive door and wall shielding panels.
  • Stainless steel — chosen where maximum cleanability and a noncombustible surface matter most, common in institutional settings and higher-energy applications like PET/CT-adjacent shielding. This can be added on by request to most of our adhesive shielding options.
  • Aluminum diamond plate — a lighter-weight rigid facing with a durable, industrial appearance, easier to handle in the field than steel. Add-on available by request.
  • Plywood — the shielding core laminated to plywood, intended for customers who want to fabricate their own enclosures or cabinetry using standard woodworking methods. Add-on available by request.

Choosing Flexible vs. Rigid

As a general guide: flexible sheet suits equipment interiors, irregular shapes, curved surfaces, and situations where the shielding will be hidden or handled during fabrication. Rigid panels suit exposed walls and doors, high-traffic areas, and any application where a clean, durable finished surface matters as much as the shielding underneath.

Mounting: Adhesive Isn't the Only Option

Peel-and-stick PSA is the default mounting method across nearly all of these configurations, and it's covered in detail in Part 3 of this series. But it isn't the only option. Rigid panels can also be mechanically fastened — field-drilled, supplied with pre-drilled holes, or retained with tabs or brackets — which is useful where a surface isn't a good adhesive candidate, or where a project calls for a removable or serviceable installation rather than a permanent bond. Mechanical fastening doesn't materially change the shielding performance when properly designed.
